Now I completely understand why some parents dread potty training. I have been reading many articles on training. The experts say pt can be difficult for some children, but near impossible for stubborn toddlers. Well, that's what we're dealing with.
Yesterday was a set back- he peed AND pooped (poor babysitter had to clean that one up!) in his pants all day. Refused to sit on the toilet. I held him there a few times, but no results. Today, I decided this wasn't a battle I was going to lose. After all, he's almost 3 1/2 and now I know darn well he can connect the two. So today we woke up, put on the underwear and attempted the morning pee. Let's just say it was no trip to the park. Screaming, tantrums, you name it. He kept yelling at me that he was done with this potty stuff and wanted "nufing" to do with it. His words were literally those out of a teenagers mouth. Luke's mom was here and we couldn't believe the stuff he was saying! I remained calm and very firm. I frankly told him that he WILL NOT pee in his pants today and that his pee belongs in the toilet. Furthermore, you will sit on the toilet until you go. After I said that, I got nervous. What if he sat there all day? I knew there was no turning back on my word. I sat at the computer to try to read every "potty training a stubborn child" article I could. The main theme in all of them was consistency and sticking to your plan. They warned to not go back and forth with a diaper even out of convenience. Well, 2 1/2 agonizing hours later, his tune completely changed and he beckoned for me to come help him go potty. He did and was the happiest kid you've ever seen. The next time, the battle was quite shorter. Tonight, the babysitter made him sit there for 1 1/2 hours, but he went! And the funny part was that he was SO happy afterwards- she said he was jumping for joy.
So yes, this blog is my therapy(-: I'm just thankful Luke is off for the next 4 days and can assist with this wonderfully difficult stage in parenting. And can I just say I'm dreading those teenage years? I got such a glimpse today...uuuggghhhh Good thing he's cute(-:
