A New Language
It's funny to learn how a kid actually perceives things sometimes. A few weeks ago we had a cute example that I wanted to share. We took Kai to his new school where we did a tour of the school, classrooms, etc while it was in session. We walked into the K classroom and the teacher of course was teaching the kids in Spanish. She finished and walked over to Kai and said something in Spanish and then smiles and says " Are you excited for school next year?" Of course he replies with a quick "Yes!" (I pray that desire never goes away) She then told him to make himself at home. He walks right over to the snack table, grabs a cup of applesauce and sits there eating and talking with the kids. I know, he's so shy. Afterwards, we get home and he's talking on the phone to Grammy Nieuwenhuis. I heard him tell her about his tour and asked "Grammy, can you speak Spanish?" She must have replied no. His next question was "Well, can Papa speak Spanish?" Again, the answer must have been no. He then says "Well, that's ok, I'll just talk to my daddy and he can tell you what I'm saying!" After he hung up, I realized that he thought he was going to lose his English language and take up a new one! AND he was accepting that. It was so innocent and so endearing. I explained to him that he will ALWAYS know English because that is his first language and that Spanish and future languages will just be an added bonus. He responds with a big sigh "OOOOOHHHH!!" Ah, little Kai, there's so much to learn(-:
